To Send or Not to Send....(Christmas Cards)

"You have such a pretty face, you should be on a Christmas card!" Yes, a quote from one of my favorite Christmas movies, Elf (as mentioned before!)

Well, why not put that lovely face of yours on a Christmas card? There are so many to choose from, especially online, so the real question is what is the best price and who's going to get them to you in time to send out before 2011?

With people being crunched on time + money this holiday season, many people are opting out of sending Christmas cards. But what if sending a Christmas card not only brought joy and smiles to your loved ones and kept you in touch with friends and family, but also helped get you your dream job? Check out this article from www.Glassdoor.com about "How Holiday Cards Can Help You Network".

The big ones in the "Christmas Card Industry" are Shutterfly, Snapfish and Hallmark,...all online of course! Let's take a deeper look at my favorites offered from Shutterfly....

My favorites tend to be the classic "Merry Christmas" cards such as this one, (and isn't that blonde family cute?) Maybe we'll send that one out + keep that picture! (my family will be like....um...who are these people?) My other favorite is this 5x7 card pictured here. Of course if you a celebrating another holiday other than Christmas, there many fun designs like "Starlight Joy" or this "Classic Monogram" card. If you're crunched for time, and time is money, Shutterfly can address + stamp and send out your Season's Greetings for you!

Think ahead: And looking forward to 2011, while you're ordering your Christmas cards, you might as well create a nice photo calendar. Check them out here! Currently you can save 30% on photo calendars. Deal!

Free Shipping: Don't forget to check for free shipping codes on my favorite coupon sites, or I can just save you the hassle, and the shipping code currently is SHIP50 for orders over $50. My other favorite section of Shutterfly is their "Special Offers" section....there are special deals here posted daily to help you buy some gifts for the family + friends!

So my Conclusion to sending out Christmas cards? Well, it's only once a year, there are plenty of cards and different costs to choose from. Secondly I always enjoy it sending and receiving cards, so I say to certainly send out your Season's Greetings! Keep in touch with loved ones and bring joy to your friends + family! Merry Christmas!

You Say "Pierógi, Pyrogy or Perogi"...I Say "Delicious Cheap Eats!"

Every Chicagoan loves pirogies! And no matter how you spell it,....pierógi, pyrogy or perogi....everyone knows that pirogies are delicious filled dumplings! Homemade pierogies are also preeeeeetty cheap to make as well! Pretty much all they require is a couple potatoes, flour, egg and cheese...and a chunk of time for pirogie-making! It goes quicker with 2 or 3 people. (Ask you kids or family members/roommates to help!) My husband and I enjoy making these tasty little dumplings together and then, afterward enjoy eating them and sharing them with friends! Make a double batch and freeze a bunch for easy weeknight dinners, or serve with applesauce and sour cream for an easy delicious and cheap party food! 21963_657071935435_2402082_37764067_6576826_n.jpg

Ingredients for Pirogi Dough (makes 50 dumplings)
4 cups flour
1 tsp salt
2 large eggs
1 cup sour cream
(also more sour cream to use later with the finished pierogies!)
1/2 c. butter, softened and cut into small pieces

Pirogi Dough
To prepare the dough, mix together the flour, salt, beaten egg, sour cream and soft butter and work together in a stand mixer with a dough hook (about 5-7 minutes) until the dough loses most of its stickiness.

Wrap the dough in plastic and let it rest 20 minutes in the fridge (it can rest overnight up to 2 days, but it is much easier to work with the day of). Each batch of dough makes about 50 pierogies (3 inch size).

Potato, Cheese & Onion Filling: (Classic!)
Boil 5 red potatoes until soft. (I didn't peel mine and they turned out fine) While the potatoes are boiling, finely chop 1 large sweet onion and saute it in butter until soft and translucent. If you use a regular onion, add a little teaspoon of sugar to help caramelize it.

Mash the potatoes when fork tender with the onions and add 4-8 oz of grated sharp cheddar cheese (depending on the cheesiness desired). Add salt & pepper. To mash the filling I used an immersion blender, but you can just mash by hand or using an electric hand mixer).

Then let the potato mixture cool, otherwise it is almost impossible to work with (super sticky!!).

Prepare the Pierogies:

Start a large pot of boiling water for later and set out drying racks.

Roll the dough on a floured board or counter top until about 1/8 inch thick. Cut circles with a cookie cutter or other tool, about 3 inches wide. Place a small ball of filling on each dough round and fold the dough over, forming a semi-circle. Press the edges together and finish with the tines of a fork to make the seal and a cute pattern.

THEN - Boil the pierogies, a few at a time, in a large pot of water. They are done with they float to the top (about 8-10 minutes). Scoop them out with a slotted spoon and let dry.
21963_657071930445_2402082_37764066_8025981_n.jpg

To eat them right away, you can:
Saute the pierogies with chopped onions and fry with butter until lightly crispy. Serve with a side of sour cream for a true pierogi meal. OR My favorite is to bake them on parchment paper or foil in the oven and lightly spray with olive oil to get that cripsy texture! (About 20 minutes at 350 degrees) Serve with sour cream (I like adding applesauce on them as well but some people say that's just me being weird)

For later:
If you don't want to cook all the pierogies right away, you can store them in the fridge after the boiling/drying stage for several days or freeze them for several months in freezer bags.

Total Cost:
    • Flour 2 cups: $1.00
    • Egg: .16 cents
    • Sour Cream: $1.00
    • 5 red potatoes: .87 cents
    • 8 oz cheese: $1.89
    • 1 sweet onion: .60 cents
50 delicious homemade pierogies = $5.52 (about .11 cents/pierogi) These are delicious cheap eats! Yum yum! (compare that to Mrs. T's! Usually $4.99 for 18 pierogies!)

Can You Have Joy from Frugality?

...I would say a resounding yes! However it takes the right mindset to get there with discipline and learning to make the best choices. So, take a moment to consider your spending and to think about how and why you manage your finances the way you choose.

Personally, even being a "Fru-Girl", I find I have yet to get rid myself of more financially bad habits and tighten the belt more in 2011. I realized I can be saving more for the future when I listened to one of my favorite broadcasts...Janet Parshall on "In the Market" on Moody Bible Radio with none other than America's Cheapest Family, Steve and Annette Economides.

There are many misconceptions about frugality; Many people think being frugal is not a choice, or it is depressing, or that people are forced into being frugal because you aren't 'rich' or whatever...however Steve and Annette Economides really bring the truth about living joyfully without spending excessively. As Janet and the Economides family discuss on the recent broadcast, they are saving and without debt because as Christians, they are not 'owners' of their finances, but merely stewards of the financial blessings that God bestows on them. In being responsible stewards, we must save so that we can be generous in giving to others, help our families, friends, and community and live without going into debt. I highly recommend listening to the broadcast from December 15, Hour 1 found here. Not only do they talk joyfully about saving, but also talk about wonderful ideas for Christmas gifts and bringing joy into others' lives as well. Here's a little bit more about the Economides family from The News of Today:

"The family of 7 is known as America's cheapest family. They get by on under $44,000 a year, which seems almost impossible for a family with 5 children. living in Phoenix Arizona. Despite being almost impossibly frugal, the family still buys name brand clothes, they eat healthy food, and live in a very nice area of Phoenix. Their trick is to plan well in advance on spending habits, as well as look for bargains..."

My savings plan came into sharp contrast when Steve was talking about how years ago, while he was only making $6.25 an hour, he managed to save $1000 cash in less than a year. Could you do that today? What would you do with $1000 dollars?

I began thinking,....where could I begin to save more? What are my bad financial habits that are taking away my financial resources.

A big and basic bad habit for me is eating out. Unfortunately, I love grabbing breakfast at Starbucks + Panera on my way to work - and how is spending $6 on coffee + breakfast (or lunch) a couple times a week frugal? The answer: it's not! By cutting out my breakfast habit, I can be saving $20+ a week and investing it or putting it towards something substantial.

With an average savings of $20.00 x 52 weeks = $1040

Consider even the smallest 'frugal busters' or budget drainers, like small fees or ATM fees; even if you are paying one ATM fee with an average of $2.00 twice a month, that's an extra $48.00 annually and over 5 years, $240.00! If you are complacent in coughing up $2 every time you need cash, you need to rethink your savings plan!

Anyway, back to the subject of "Joy from Frugality". The truth is, once you start saving and implement some financial discipline, your savings will accumulate and you can "choose your own adventure" as my fellow frugal bloggers say....save to buy your first house, give generously to your charity/church, help a niece or nephew pay for college, start a saving's fund for your children, whatever you choose, saving money will help move you towards your dreams to bring joy to your own family and others as well.

Suggestions to get started in budgeting and establishing savings....

  1. Make yourself a weekly budget: Check out Kristin's ideas for a weekly budget from "Couponing To Disney" She saves so she can take her family on fun Disney World vacations! What will you do with your savings?
  2. Make some frugal friends...get your friends on the same page with you about saving...talk openly about each others' saving goals and just be real about saving. My friends and family know I am the "Fru-Girl" and we attend cheap or free social events and have fun without excessive spending!
  3. Choose your reason for saving and discuss this with your spouse and family members so you're all on the same page if you're all in on the same budget.
  4. Make saving a part of daily life! Be happy about saving!
  5. Gather up your Gift Cards - if you are spending, couple your gift cards with a coupon to save your bank account. So many people have unused gift-cards laying around the house. Make using them a priority! Use them for Christmas Shopping, Vacations, Travel, whatever, just use them!
  6. Spread joy with your frugal lifestyle! Bake something for your mailman, co-worker, favorite hairdresser....a small loaf of pumpkin bread (an idea from America's Cheapest Family broadcast on Moody Radio) only costs .30 cents to make and can truly brighten someone's day!

While blogging today I was reminded of not only a favorite Christmas memory from childhood, but also a frugal adventure courtesy of my wonderful parents. A song from "The Nutcracker" came on my free Pandora station (under Classical Christmas) and it reminded me how my parents used to usher at Columbus' Palace Theater so that we could all see the annual Ballet of The Nutcracker for free/discounted. That was truly one of my favorite holiday traditions,....my sister and I would get dressed up in pretty holiday dresses and our family would drive downtown Columbus to watch the Ballet; the music from the symphony is so memorable, the costumes so beautiful and the story, so magical!

The last note I would like to mention, is about the most recent "Frugal Farmer" in Leroy, Minnesota, a story currently on CNN. In life he was known as 'frugal' in a negative way, but after leaving over 3 million dollars to his town, the local senior center, the fire department, churches and more;"generous" is what they say, is how he'll be remembered.

Merry Christmas to all!

10 Reasons I Shop at Home for Christmas....

In poker, so the saying goes, "If you can't spot the sucker at the table- it's you".

In regards to shopping and spending money, the same thing is the case. In the past few days, I have heard so many people talking about running around spending $15 and up on children's toys...the exact same toys I had shipped free to me for $6.00-9.00 dollars each last week.

My Advice for Last Minute Shoppers....
  • So if you're still shopping, finish up online with your credit card (Not bank or debit card!).
  • There are MANY options even last minute to buy online to get things before Christmas for a better price than the mall! From your home computer, try SlickDeals.net and FatWallet.com's Today's Top Deals for up to date listings of deals along with coupons and notifications for free shipping.
  • ALWAYS use a cash-back method, like Ebates, and group together purchases for free shipping if it's not already included.
Even during the last minutes of Christmas shopping, there's NO WAY you would find me running around the stores like a maniac trying to FIND the right gift for someone on my list. Why? Let me count the ways...

  1. Brick & Mortar stores have to pay rent to someone - and guess who's paying their rent/mortgage? You!
  2. There are a lot of crazy people out there....seriously. They are grumpy cause their shopping isn't done and they are not fun to be around.
  3. Stores have to keep things in stock...and sometimes, (quite often during Christmas) they don't have your size or color, or even carry a certain item. So then you have to go to the next store, and the next...and the next! It's a wild goose chase!
  4. Everyone at the mall is running out of boxes or being stingy when they do give out boxes. Ordering online = your item is shipped in some sort of box.
  5. In Chicago, there is snow EVERYWHERE! Not only is it really, really cold...but it's dangerous to drive to the mall and around town! (especially when 70% of the shoppers are crazed + distracted)
  6. I can spend my time with my family; Instead of running around like a maniac shopping on Monday night, I watched the Bears beat the Vikings with my husband! Quality time with the husband + our cute cats (especially with a Bears' victory) is a definite plus!
  7. Cheaper prices are found online - seriously. If you don't believe me, let's compare lists and see who spent more. I'm guessing it's you!
  8. You can use 'rewards' and 'cash back' options for online shopping, like Ebates + FatWallet. Not to mention, FatWallet.com and SlickDeals.net also have up to date listings of great deals, free shipping and more!
  9. By shopping online and staying home, I'm keeping my car safe (from snow, ice + crazy people) in a garage...as opposed to driving around town finishing my shopping.
  10. No risk of getting pick-pocketed or car-jacked when you're at home! I do recommend ALWAYS using a credit card that is NOT tied to your bank account. A 'credit/debit card' from your bank is just simply not safe - it is linked directly to your bank account and assets. You have much more protection buying online with a credit card.
Good luck to all the crazy shoppers out there!

$100 Stocking Stuffers?

Stocking stuffer ideas seem to be getting more and more ridiculous and extravagant each year. This year I have seen Ipods, Cell Phones, and even diamond necklaces and car keys to luxury cars to be presented on commercials as 'stocking stuffers'. It seems a little excessive doesn't it? And that's not even getting to the presents under the tree! During this season of joy, why not take the time to consider why you are giving and try to simplify at least one of the Christmas traditions in your holiday.

To get in the right mindset of giving, here's some homework for you....consider, what is the point of the stocking?

Also let's look at the legends and history of the Christmas Stocking;

"While there are no written records of the origin of the Christmas stocking, there are popular legends that attempt to tell the history of this Christmas tradition...Very long ago, there lived a poor man and his three very beautiful daughters. He had no money to get his daughters married, and he was worried what would happen to them after his death. Saint Nicholas was passing through when he heard the villagers talking about the girls. St. Nicholas wanted to help, but knew that the old man wouldn`t accept charity. He decided to help in secret. He waited until it was night and crept through the chimney. He had three bags of gold coins with him, one for each girl. As he was looking for a place to keep those three bags, he noticed stockings of the three girls that were hung over the mantelpiece for drying. He put one bag in each stocking and off he went. When the girls and their father woke up the next morning, they found the bags of gold coins and were of course, overjoyed. The girls were able to get married and live happily ever after.

This led to the custom of children hanging stockings or putting out shoes, eagerly awaiting gifts from Saint Nicholas. Sometimes the story is told with gold balls instead of bags of gold. That is why three gold balls, sometimes represented as oranges, are one of the symbols for St. Nicholas. And so St. Nicholas is a gift-giver."

Some of my favorite reads a a kid were the "Little House on the Prairie" books. The little girls were always delighted to receive hard candy and oranges for Christmas. Watching their story available on youtube of exchanging gifts on Christmas morning truly brings the simple joy back to the Christmas season.

Spread Joy this Christmas!

Great Alternatives to Shopping at the Mall!

It's Christmas Eve and rather than going to beat the last minute crazed shoppers at the mall, here are some great alternatives for gifts to put under the tree for your loved ones!
  • Money (simple, easy and everyone likes getting money!) Visit your nearest ATM that doesn't charge a fee of course!
  • Lotto tickets (for folks not opposed to the lotto!) Find these at your grocery store, quickie-mart or gas station. Winning some holiday cash is a fun gift!
  • Baking or cooking something special (Pirogies frozen in a freezer bag are a great gift!)
  • Movie Tickets to a local cinema
  • Sporting Event Tickets, visit TicketMaster.com
  • Membership to a Museum or Garden (Chicago Botanic Gardens, Chicago History Museum, Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium)
  • Pay for an Entry Fee into a race!
  • Southwest.com Gift Card (available online) Or just gift someone a flight from your "Rapid Rewards" to see you!
  • Write a heart-felt letter - sometimes this is better than a gift!
  • Book swap (swapping books from your home library that you have already read with friends and family is a great idea for families of readers!)
  • Foodie Basket (go to your local grocery store and pick up their favorite foods!)
  • Moms, Dads, Grandmas & Grandpas: Gift a meaningful piece of jewelry or something from your household to the younger generation (tell them the history behind the object or jewelry), family gifts are especially treasured because you can't buy it at the mall.
  • Groupons: Groupon has a holiday event, "Grouponicus" that has very cool "gifty" coupons you can gift your friends and family. Don't forget to use Ebates for Groupon to get some cash back!
  • Gift Cards(to restaurants, online stores, e-gift cards or retail stores) Now you can find a wide assortment of gift cards at Walgreens, Jewel, CVS and other convenient locations.

My point is even on Chirstmas eve there are many ways to avoid mall congestion and still have meaningful, wonderful gifts for your loved ones - without going broke!

And if you're reading this and don't still have shopping to do, then, congratulations, sit back, relax and enjoy Conan's Crazy Christmas Antics...found here!
