Frugal Grocery Shopping in Chicago

In Chicago, Jewel-Osco and Dominick's are everywhere! But, choosing between going to Jewel or Dominick's is not your only choice for all your groceries. You can save a lot of money by a little bit of adventure and a little bit of planning ahead.

Plan your week (quickly)

Now I realize not everyone may have the chance to plan their weekly meals, but it reduces stress throughout the week, and eventually saves time and money. So on Saturday or Sunday when I have an extra minute or so of free time, I jot down the week's evening dinnertime schedule (quickly determining if a family dinner is possible for each night, if I have time to cook, etc). It goes like this:

· Mon - - COOK
· Tues - - PACK/LEFTOVERS
· Wed - - COOK
· Thur - -EASY COOK (busy night)
· Fri - - -COOK
· Sat - - -Go out to dinner with friends

So for the week above, I need 3 regular cooking meals, 1 Easy Cook meal (something like boil pasta and add sauce, or a pre-made freezer meal) and 1 day where I pack my lunch and my family eats leftovers.

Scan the Ads

Then, I glance over the local adds (online) for meat that's on sale. This will probably be the main course of my 3 COOK meals. (looking for meat $2 or under)

For example....This week, I found boneless skinless fresh Chicken Tenders for $1.79/lb at Village Marketplace, my COOK meals reflect and are planned as such: Pineapple Chicken Lettuce Wraps, Chicken with Artichokes and Chicken Parmesan. Also Boston Lettuce is 2 Heads for $1.00...thus, Lettuce Wraps and side salads are planned with each meal.

Adventuring out to new places:

Discover your neighborhood - Do not be totally satisfied with your big chain supermarkets! Venture to places that attract immigrants or local ethnic groups; these smaller markets tend to have fresher and cheaper produce than Jewel and Dominick's. Shop fresh items (meat, produce, and even some cheeses) at these local Grocery stores and save the commercialized items and your coupons for Jewel.

Some of Chicago's cheaper alternatives: (for north side)

Food4Less, Main Street & McCormick (Takes coupons, Kroger store brand, great produce & Mexican food section)
Village Marketplace, two locations in Skokie and Carol Stream (amazing produce sales, best meat & deli counter with great prices, Kosher products, friendly staff that remembers you)
Marketplace on Oakton (fresh produce, more meat and fish selections)
Aldi - opening up all over Chicago! Great prices especially on dried goods, great food!
Strack & Van Til, on Elston/Bucktown, (has a devoted following for their meat and deli counter, has much better prices than Jewel & Dominick's).

Save your coupons for the "Super-Markets", Jewel & Dominick's! Always match sales, coupons and rebates together and use your customer cards to get "preferred savings". At the supermarket chains, only shop for the coupon/sale items that are the American "commercialized items", (Like freezer items, soda, cereals, crackers, and cookies). This will save you immense cash throughout the year!

$$ Tip: Buy your Sunday Paper at The Dollar Tree (for only $1) and clip coupons for your week from the coupon inserts! The paper coupons are usually the best during the first week of every month. Are you even more (maybe shamelessly) frugal? Pick up coupon inserts from Starbucks or any fancy coffee shop on Sunday morning; many coffee drinkers buy the Sunday paper to read and discard and toss aside the coupon inserts! Also don't forget to log on to Coupons.com, Smartsource.com, and redplum.com to select and print online coupons. Most sites will let you print 2 coupons per computer.

To Send or Not to Send....(Christmas Cards)

"You have such a pretty face, you should be on a Christmas card!" Yes, a quote from one of my favorite Christmas movies, Elf (as mentioned before!)

Well, why not put that lovely face of yours on a Christmas card? There are so many to choose from, especially online, so the real question is what is the best price and who's going to get them to you in time to send out before 2011?

With people being crunched on time + money this holiday season, many people are opting out of sending Christmas cards. But what if sending a Christmas card not only brought joy and smiles to your loved ones and kept you in touch with friends and family, but also helped get you your dream job? Check out this article from www.Glassdoor.com about "How Holiday Cards Can Help You Network".

The big ones in the "Christmas Card Industry" are Shutterfly, Snapfish and Hallmark,...all online of course! Let's take a deeper look at my favorites offered from Shutterfly....

My favorites tend to be the classic "Merry Christmas" cards such as this one, (and isn't that blonde family cute?) Maybe we'll send that one out + keep that picture! (my family will be like....um...who are these people?) My other favorite is this 5x7 card pictured here. Of course if you a celebrating another holiday other than Christmas, there many fun designs like "Starlight Joy" or this "Classic Monogram" card. If you're crunched for time, and time is money, Shutterfly can address + stamp and send out your Season's Greetings for you!

Think ahead: And looking forward to 2011, while you're ordering your Christmas cards, you might as well create a nice photo calendar. Check them out here! Currently you can save 30% on photo calendars. Deal!

Free Shipping: Don't forget to check for free shipping codes on my favorite coupon sites, or I can just save you the hassle, and the shipping code currently is SHIP50 for orders over $50. My other favorite section of Shutterfly is their "Special Offers" section....there are special deals here posted daily to help you buy some gifts for the family + friends!

So my Conclusion to sending out Christmas cards? Well, it's only once a year, there are plenty of cards and different costs to choose from. Secondly I always enjoy it sending and receiving cards, so I say to certainly send out your Season's Greetings! Keep in touch with loved ones and bring joy to your friends + family! Merry Christmas!

10 Reasons I Shop at Home for Christmas....

In poker, so the saying goes, "If you can't spot the sucker at the table- it's you".

In regards to shopping and spending money, the same thing is the case. In the past few days, I have heard so many people talking about running around spending $15 and up on children's toys...the exact same toys I had shipped free to me for $6.00-9.00 dollars each last week.

My Advice for Last Minute Shoppers....
  • So if you're still shopping, finish up online with your credit card (Not bank or debit card!).
  • There are MANY options even last minute to buy online to get things before Christmas for a better price than the mall! From your home computer, try SlickDeals.net and FatWallet.com's Today's Top Deals for up to date listings of deals along with coupons and notifications for free shipping.
  • ALWAYS use a cash-back method, like Ebates, and group together purchases for free shipping if it's not already included.
Even during the last minutes of Christmas shopping, there's NO WAY you would find me running around the stores like a maniac trying to FIND the right gift for someone on my list. Why? Let me count the ways...

  1. Brick & Mortar stores have to pay rent to someone - and guess who's paying their rent/mortgage? You!
  2. There are a lot of crazy people out there....seriously. They are grumpy cause their shopping isn't done and they are not fun to be around.
  3. Stores have to keep things in stock...and sometimes, (quite often during Christmas) they don't have your size or color, or even carry a certain item. So then you have to go to the next store, and the next...and the next! It's a wild goose chase!
  4. Everyone at the mall is running out of boxes or being stingy when they do give out boxes. Ordering online = your item is shipped in some sort of box.
  5. In Chicago, there is snow EVERYWHERE! Not only is it really, really cold...but it's dangerous to drive to the mall and around town! (especially when 70% of the shoppers are crazed + distracted)
  6. I can spend my time with my family; Instead of running around like a maniac shopping on Monday night, I watched the Bears beat the Vikings with my husband! Quality time with the husband + our cute cats (especially with a Bears' victory) is a definite plus!
  7. Cheaper prices are found online - seriously. If you don't believe me, let's compare lists and see who spent more. I'm guessing it's you!
  8. You can use 'rewards' and 'cash back' options for online shopping, like Ebates + FatWallet. Not to mention, FatWallet.com and SlickDeals.net also have up to date listings of great deals, free shipping and more!
  9. By shopping online and staying home, I'm keeping my car safe (from snow, ice + crazy people) in a garage...as opposed to driving around town finishing my shopping.
  10. No risk of getting pick-pocketed or car-jacked when you're at home! I do recommend ALWAYS using a credit card that is NOT tied to your bank account. A 'credit/debit card' from your bank is just simply not safe - it is linked directly to your bank account and assets. You have much more protection buying online with a credit card.
Good luck to all the crazy shoppers out there!

Shopping online is so easy, even our cats can do it! Bella + Layla are shopping for good deals on Slickdeals.net and FatWallet.com!

So get ready for the Blizzard of 2011!!!

Part of being frugal, is being prepared and according to Amy Freeze on Fox Chicago and the Weather Channel we're going to be getting 12-20 inches of snow in Chicago!

So get ready for the Blizzard of 2011!!!

Here's what's in my Snowpocalypse Kit....(I put it together over lunch hour today)

  • Card Games - deck of cards, Monopoly Deal (got it free with a coupon fyi!)
  • LED Flashlights - Big and small sizes (we also like the hands-free headlamps!)
  • MAG Light, for fending off the Abominable Snowman and also finding stuff if the power goes out. Also comes in handy for telling ghost stories!
  • Non-Cooking Food - Bananas, Tangerines, Oranges, Mangoes, Pecans, Whole Grain Chips, why not be healthy during a blizzard?
  • Board Games!!! There may be no power...so we have Settlers of Catan (with 2 expansion packs) That should keep us busy...it is seriously a great game!!! (oh and we bought it all 50% off retail!)
  • Water - fill up your Brita Pitcher and get some bottled water.
  • Candles and reliable Matches/lighter
  • LED Tea Lights
  • LONG Extension Cord (for apartment-dwellers sometimes you get partial power outages and need to be able to plug in if somewhere in your building still has power).
  • Radio
  • Batteries of various varieties
  • YakTrax - makes walking outside in the snow a breeze!
  • Underwater Camera - because you don't know how deep the snow will get....(also comes in handy for 'playing in the snow' pictures!)
  • Nail File, just because I detest not knowing where a good nail file is when I need one!
  • A good book or two - "Unbroken" and The Bible are my choices. I highly recommend both!
  • Warm Blankets (Sleeping Bags?) I don't know how bad it's gonna get but we have camping gear that's good to -20 below so, that should be sufficient, right??
  • Needed medications - gather them up so they are easy to locate.

TO DO before the storm hits:
  • Gather you your Snowpocalypse kit & supplies together before the storm.
  • Charge your cell phones + Ipads, laptops, etc.
  • Clean up your house, you don't want to be stumbling over things if the power goes out
  • Fill up bottles of water, you don't need to go out and buy bottled water, just fill up a couple pitchers in your house.
  • Get some foods that don't require cooking and that aren't fridge dependent....bananas, fruits, granola, etc. (If the power does go out you want to keep the fridge cold by limiting the opening of the Freezer/Fridge doors)
  • Clean the Litter-boxes - you don't want to do that in the dark if the power goes out.
  • Update your Facebook status to "OMG Snowpocalypse!!!!"
  • Cancel your plans because you do not want to be driving in this kinda weather!

The crazy sunrise this morning...
I knew we would be in for the real deal when I saw this morning's sunrise and remembered my Granny's saying, "Red at night, sailor's delight....Red in the morning, sailor's warning!" And do you see this sunrise???!!! RED!!! Brace yourselves Chicago - here comes the snow!!!!

Traveling in 2010...

I love to travel and this past year have been so blessed to be able to take so many lovely vacations around the world and country! This past year we have traveled more than we have been in Chicago it seems! As we are packing our bags again for another wonderful trip, it's great to look back through our pictures at 2010 adventures and all the wonderful places and people we've seen!

In June, we traveled to Marco Island Florida....
We spent a night in Miami, from a plane delay....
In July we stopped in Boston, MA....
And caught up with our family at Cape Cod,...

In August we traveled to England...
The Netherlands...
Germany...
Italy...
Austria...
Switzerland...
and France!
For the Holidays we saw our family in Ohio...
And Maryland...
...and then finally back to Chicago!

We thank God for all the blessings of travel and time spent together that He brings into our lives! We love to travel, adventure and make fun memories together and we love to share our expeditions with friends and family!

Ipad Review - Thanks to TCS Software

I am so happy to be an Ipad user; a million thanks to TCS Software! Even though the Ipad looked amazingly cool when it came out, I was still hesitant to jump into the Apple market because I have always been strictly a PC user. However, now I would highly endorse it to most technology users and media consumers because I am extremely impressed my Ipad’s many uses and its overall functionality! Already, in just one month, I have truly put my Ipad to use in hundreds of ways!

I love the Ipad’s size….it’s mobile, portable, has enough space to type comfortably on a touch-screen keyboard and still fits conveniently in my purse! As an Interview Center Coordinator for a major university, graduate student and free-lance musician, having access to my email accounts with a Wi-Fi connection lets me keep track of my music students, schedule gigs with clients, coordinate essential interview schedules and stay connected with my professors and coursework, all from my Ipad at basically any location! Last week I was away from my office at an Expo and I still manager to coordinate a significant interview schedule for my client; receiving the list of selected candidates by email, contacting the preselected candidates and creating an efficient schedule on the Ipad’s “Notes” application. Once the schedule was created on “Notes” I exported it easily to my office-based email. Without the portability of the Ipad, I would have had to create the schedule during overtime hours. I also sync my Ipad with Google Documents, keeping my calendar current as I plan and organize my events, gigs and meetings.

Not only is my Ipad functional, it’s also fun! While waiting for hours in doctors’ offices or riding the EL to downtown Chicago, I enjoy playing games or listening to music that I have downloaded from the App/Itunes Store. I also purchase my assigned book-club books on my Ipad through the Kindle Application, allowing me to read novels wherever I go, without the hassle of carrying heavy books around with me. I have an entire library in my purse (including sheet music and graduate school texts, fun novels and in my purse!)

In Chicago the weather is constantly changing and I absolutely love The Weather Channel’s Ipad application! I check it every morning and multiple times throughout the day to know what will happen weather-wise. Once you tap the icon, the application immediately shows the current and future Doppler radar of your area. It also alerts you of severe weather warnings in your area and keeps you updated on the hurricane season – which is important if you enjoy storms as much as I do!

Musically, from the App Store I downloaded “Uke Tune” which is a ukulele tuner. There are similar applications for every instrument available. The application can play standard or custom tuning notes. For standard ukulele, it plays the 4 string pitches; A, C, E, and G to allow you to tune your ukulele by ear. This month, I brought my Ipad along to gigs and have used it to tune up my instrument prior to performances!

I’m sure I will discover a hundred more uses for the Ipad! What a great tool and I would recommend it to many people seeking out an entertaining, functional and portable wireless device.
